He is a son to Javed Akhtar who is a screenwriter, politician, and Honey Iran who is an actress and writer. Zoya Akhtar who is his sister is a screenwriter and producer. In 2000, Akhtar married Adhuna Bhabani after three-year dating. He first met her in 2001 while shooting his directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai, which also featured Adhuna’s as a Bollywood stylist. Though they separated in 2016 after being together for 16 years, they have two daughters[ Shakya and Akira].

Akhtar had a dream of being an actor. In the year 1991, he was an assistant filmmaker in Lamhe and later in the year 1997 an assistant director in Himalaya. Akhtar loved acting, therefore he started his production company known as Excel Entertainment alongside Ritesh Sidhwani. The movie Dil Chahta Hai which was done in the year 2011 gave him directorial fame. He further went ahead to direct other movies such as Lakshya which he did in the year 2004 and he wrote the soundtrack lyrics for the film Bride and prejudice. Other movies he successfully made were Don which was done in the year 2006 and he did a short movie titled positive in the following year. The movie was to educate people about HIV-AIDS.
He has won numerous awards. The movie [rock on], which was done in 2008 won a second National Award for being the best Feature movie in Hindi in which he was the producer. Other movies he has won awards include; Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the movie gave him two Filmfare awards. He was a supporting actor and producer. In 2011, he made a series movie Don, which has remained to be the most successful movie up to now. Two years after, he achieved success by playing Milkha Singh in the movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, under his name he won Filmfare award as the best actor. Akhtar got a lot of praise for his role in the movie Wazir and in Dil Dhadakne Do which was a comedy-drama in 2016.
