Ranveer Singh was born on born 6 July 1985 into a Sindhi family in Mumbai, Maharastra. He always dreamed to be an actor, although he felt that his dreams are too far-fetched. After graduation College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, Singh attended Indiana University, where he earned a degree in creative writing in 2007. Afterwards, he returned to India, where he briefly worked in advertising as a copywriter but abandoned it to pursue a career in acting.

Currently, Singh is one of the most popular and highest paid actors in India. He consistently appears in the annual Forbes India Celebrity’s 100 list since 2012. In 2018, Singh was ranked the 8th on this list. And Forbes estimated his yearly earnings to be ?846.7 million (US$12 million), which makes him the fifth- highest-paid Indian actor.
Singh dropped his surname Bhavnani because he felt that it is too long for an actor. He is married to another Indian actress, Deepika Padukone.

At first, Singh sent his portfolio to directors and went to various auditions, but without much success. Eventually, after extensive auditions, Ranveer Singh got the leading male role in the 2010 romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat. Critics praised Singh’s performance in the film. For this role, he received the Best Male Debut award at the Filmfare Awards.
Singh’s next role in the comedy Ladies vs Ricky Bahl brought him even more success. Although his third major film, Lootera, wasn’t a commercial success, critics noted his performance in the film.

Then, in Padmaavat, he played Alauddin Khilji, a brutal king of the medieval Delhi Sultanate. These two films turned out to be hugely successful. Both pictures are among the all-time highest grossing films in India. They earned Singh numerous awards and recognitions. Bajiro Mastani brought him the Filmfare award for Best Actor, and Padmaavat earned Singh the Filmfare Critics Best Actor award and a nomination for Best Actor.
In the 2018 action film Simmba, Singh played the role of a corrupt policeman. It turned out to be the second highest grossing Indian film of 2018, earning ?4 billion (US$58 million) worldwide.
In his latest film, Gully Boy, Singh starred as a young aspiring rapper. The film was based on the lives of Indian rappers Divine and Naezy.
