His first wife Richa Sharma whom he married in 1987 died of a brain tumor. They were both blessed with one daughter named Trishala, who resides in the USA. He later divorced his second wife Rhea Pillai Dutt after being together for seven years. In the year 2008, Dutt married his third wife Manyata, they both have a son and daughter who are twins.
Due to the possession of illegal arms and weapons, Dutt was arrested and charged under a provision of the Terrorist and Disruptive activities act. He was later released on 25 January 2016, because he acted according to the law and was of good behavior. Another controversy that affected his parliamentary candidature was when he was accused of being involved in Mumbai blasts. The supreme court rejected his candidature after the involvement of this blasts. Later on, in the year 2018, he released a film based on his life story.
